We were looking forward to sitting outside, basking in the sunshine, munching on salads and supping on a cheeky lager. Unfortunately the weather was not complying so, rather than dine al fresco, we headed indoors for one of the booth seats and the hard work started. What to order? The menu, far from being overloaded with too much to choose from, suffered from an enviable ‘it all looks so appealing, I’d like to taste it all’ syndrome. We were greeted promptly and seated by the knowledgeable, affable waiter (a real hottie, too) amongst a crowd of diners. At 1:30pm the restaurant was full; a good sign, we thought. I ordered the Spinach and Ricotta Cannelloni, a bit of a risk as I’m a committed carnivore, but it was really tasty and sprinkled with real parmesan shavings rather than the usual depressing powdered variety. My companion ordered the Pork Belly Roast accompanied by roast veg and wilted baby spinach, finished in apple sauce. We asked for crackling, which was not on the menu, but was happily supplied. A glass of Astrolabe complimented our meal nicely. Overall, we give the Riccarton Fox and Ferret a big thumbs up. This is great British pub fare: well cooked, well presented and in very generous portions. The restaurant itself has a cosy British feel, well in line with their stated aim to be a ‘world class gastro pub enterprise’.
