Diminish and Ascend, 2014 – David McCracken

SCAPE Public Art

The vertiginous Diminish and Ascend has previously drawn great attention at Sculpture by the Sea, Sydney, and Sculpture on the Gulf on Waiheke Island. Now located in Kiosk Lake in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, this impressive artwork gives the illusion of a staircase to the sky rising out of the lake, taking on its own resonance. This is an excellent example of McCracken’s highly-skilled works, which specialise in pushing the capabilities of metal to realise formally sophisticated and tactile works.
