Cityscape caught up with New Zealand fashion’s bright young thing and Cooper co-designer Julia Leuchars following the launch of their SS18 collection.
Describe Cooper SS18 in three words.
Off-duty, high-impact, shine!
What is the overarching design aesthetic of the collection?
We want people to live their lives in Cooper – it’s a collection that can take you from desk to dinner and everywhere in between.
What inspires your designs?
Gosh – everything and anything! My inspirations are constantly changing and evolving as I do! A colour, an Instagram, travelling, or walking past someone on the street – anything that catches my eye can inspire and influence me. I also think of who is going to wear the collection; what are they going to be doing or where are they going.
Tell us about your favourite piece?
I’m in love with our metallic pineapple jacquard and of course all our sequins! I adore jacquards; I’m very tactile so textures appeal to me greatly. I would also admit I do have a metallic addiction (you can never-ever have enough metallic in your life!) … or rather an addiction to anything shiny! I particularly love a Lime Green and Neon Pink two tone sequin I’ve used in summer – the brightness is gorgeous and it makes everyone look tan – a must for summer!
Who is your favourite fashion icon?
My mum has always been iconic and influential in all things for me. Trelise has also been a steady influence for me – I’ve worn her brands since I was 15 and coveted them long before that. I still adore the red sequin bomber jacket that was my first purchase.
Who are your favourite designers?
Trelise Cooper, of course, but I’ve also been bitten by the Gucci bug, so Alessandro Michele, and I adore what Hedi Slimane and Anthony Vaccarello have done at Yves Saint Laurent, while the designs of IRO and McQueen constantly catch my attention, as does Olivier Rousteing and of course Dries [van Noten]. I also adore Roberto Cavalli’s dramatic romance, and Lorenzo Serafina represents everything a strong-sexy-feminine women should aspire to!

What I'm ...
Horses by PnB Rock, Kodak Black, and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie from our Theatre of Fashion 2017 playlist, and I like to play it LOUD!
Amelia Earhart: The Sound of Wings by Mary S. Lovell. Lovell also wrote The Riviera Set – I’ve decided I would have fitted into the Riviera in the 1930s quite nicely – the parties sound fabulous!
I love the cinematography of A Single Man – I could watch that over and over again. It is so beautiful and I’m in love with Julianne Moore’s character’s house!
