CSO Presents: Symphonic Oddity
The loss of musical titan David Bowie was one felt strongly worldwide last year; the pop chameleon and his music meant much to many people, and the tributes have poured virtually non-stop since. Now the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra is providing a very special one of its own with Symphonic Oddity, a concert of orchestral reimaginings of some of the Thin White Duke’s greatest tracks at Horncastle Arena on May 27.
Bowie’s invention and dazzling arrangements – from a musical career that spanned four decades and produced a catalogue of 27 studio albums, 9 live albums, and 121 singles, including 5 UK number-ones – naturally lend themselves to the full power of the orchestra, and fronting the CSO will be some of New Zealand’s own pop music heroes. Shihad’s Jon Toogood, Fur Patrol’s Julia Deans, Ladi6 and Laughton Kora will come together to celebrate Bowie’s outstanding career, each bringing their unique musical interpretation to his parade of bona fide worldwide hits; this promises to be a seriously good evening of music.
