Q&A: Sarah Mathieson

Having studied at the National School of Aesthetics and spending time abroad in New York, Sarah Mathieson - leading facialist at Champs-Elysées Day Spa - has brought her skills and knowledge to the city's premier day spas and shares some of her tips with Cityscape.

Specialty/favourite facial treatment: Eyebrows! Having had extensive eyebrow training and specialising in microblading, I love transforming clients’ brows with a tint and shape. Measuring brows so they perfectly frame your face and start/finish in the correct place can make all the difference!

How and when did you get into the beauty business? Any awards you’ve won? 2010 - I studied at the National School of Aesthetics. In 2014 I worked as a beauty therapist in New York and from there I moved to Auckland, where I worked in the clinic that took out NZ Clinic of the Year.

What’s the best thing about working at Champs-Elysées Day Spa? In December 2018 I relocated back to Christchurch and joined Champs-Elysées. Working in such a beautiful place with familiar faces makes coming to work a joy!

What makes you a great facialist? My philosophy is nice and simple – getting clients using a few results-driven products and a protective sunscreen and not overcomplicating their home skincare regime.

One tip for great skin: Never go to sleep without cleansing your skin and putting on an anti-ageing serum that contains vitamin A.

Advice for someone who’s never been to a facialist: It’s never too late to start. One facial a month and a homecare regime will make the world of difference to your skin. If scarring or large pores are your concern, try dermal needling – it breaks up old scar tissue, and the micro needles stimulate collagen, which helps makes pores less obvious.

Something about you that only your Mum knows: I can’t physically sleep without doing my night skincare regime. I can only relax after that’s done!

Fave simple self-love treatment: A facial at the end of a busy day. Going home from work, not putting any products on and letting my skin rejuvenate overnight.
