Q&A: Nat Hutton - There's a Tuesday

Christchurch band There’s A Tuesday consists of Nat Hutton, Minnie Robberds, Angus Murray and Joel Becker. Co-frontwoman and guitarist Nat talks good days with Cityscape.

We see you’ve been touring the country and recording new music this summer. Has it been hectic? Yeah it has been! Good hectic though. We’re feeling pretty mega lucky to have been able to play so many shows. We got to travel to a lot of places we’d never been to before and meet so many Kiwi musicians, a bunch we are huge fans of, such as The Beths, Bic Runga and Benee.

What are you listening to at the moment? Lots of Soccer Mommy. We’re loving Christian Lee Hutson, Beach Bunny and The Japanese House.

You’re trapped on a deserted island, what three things do you have? Hmm I’m going to have to say fried tofu with black bean sauce, a Tamagotchi, and Zack from The Suite Life of Zack & Cody ‘cause Cody gets a little annoying eh.

One day I’ll... Go to Amsterdam! Ha ha ha.

What’s your pro-tip for songwriting? I’d say always having some sort of writing device handy throughout your days, whether that be a notebook and pen or just your phone. I feel like my favourite song ideas or lyrics always come to me when I’m not trying to write something. Sitting down and being like “Okay I’m going to write a song” is never productive. Songwriting is an amazing creative outlet and you can’t force creativity.

Tell us about your first gig. Our first gig as a band was supposedly ‘opening’ for Julia Deans, who is sick! But I think there was some sort of miscommunication somewhere along the lines and we ended up playing to a group of corporate people upstairs before the show as they walked in to be seated. It was still fun for sure though.

Do you have any rituals or superstitions when you play live? We always listen to ‘Apple Pie Bed’ by Lawrence Arabia, puts us in a dancey mood.

Where did the name ‘There’s a Tuesday’ come from? One of Minnie’s friends once stated the fact that “There’s a Tuesday between a Monday and between a Wednesday.” She was definitely correct, but after our terrible sense of humour convinced us that the whole sentence would be a good band name, we soon realised that it was something like 52 characters and just obnoxiously long. Festivals were like “Nah nope, we are not going to put them on the lineup if that is their name, it’ll take up the whole poster.” So, after deep consideration and people thinking we were strange, we shortened it to just ‘There’s A Tuesday’.

It’s a cool name. Who’s someone you’d love to collab with? Phoebe Bridgers.

Fave Christchurch haunt to perform at? Blue Smoke. It’s the venue we had our first headline show at so is super special to us.

What’s your favourite spot to grab a drink in Christchurch? Smash Palace. A little bar in central Christchurch with DJs playing old vinyl from the comfort of a caravan. If you walk up a bunch of stairs, there’s a beautiful shop at the top too that sells records, zines and funny pins.

What are you looking forward to this autumn? Just continuing to write as much music as we can and play together as a band. I can honestly say there is nothing that makes me happier than performing with Minnie, Gus and Joel – They’re three of my best friends and I really could not ask for anything more.

What’s on the cards for this year? New music is on its way shortly. A couple singles and then a bigger work somewhere down the line. We have a bunch of shows too. Some announced, some still to be confirmed, but we can promise you’ll be seeing our faces in different spots around the country. It’s going to be a lovely year and we are looking forward to dancing with a bunch more humans.
