Q&A: Well-designed Spaces

Cityscape taps the talents of  Station Road's Gavin How for some interior design inspiration.

How did the business come about? Station Road Home began 25 years ago, founded by my father. He was handcrafting furniture from solid timbers which quickly progressed into a family business with a strong focus on premium craftsmanship, internationally inspired styles and artisan hand finishes. While time has moved on, Station Road is still an independent family business which holds true to these values.

What got you into furniture and interiors? I don’t ever remember a time when I wasn’t passionate about design, craftsmanship and beautifully made furniture, interiors and architecture – I think they call this the furniture bug! When the family started in furniture, it was a natural progression for me to include the design and retail aspect. I’m continually inspired by great design, the excitement of exploring and discovering new styles, amazing locations and international cultures.

You now do a lot more than just furniture? We understand that in today’s busy lifestyle, our clients are likely to have a vision they’re working towards for their home interiors but don’t always have the time or knowledge to resource, manage and execute that vision. Station Road Home assists with furniture selection, placement and interior design, along with the beautiful things like art, rugs, lamps and décor to complete the room.

Key pieces for the coming season? Anything generous in scale, a strong silhouette and with sophisticated metallic or painted finishes. This means great coffee tables with grille detailing in warm silver, pared back classic bedroom pieces and really unique statement pieces for entrance lobbies and living areas.

Particular designers or products in store that we should be keeping an eye out for? Caracole is a premium brand that always surprises and delights – the design, materials and craftsmanship is always going to be totally amazing and almost every piece is something special and unexpected that delivers a wow moment.

What prompted the move into town? For the last three years our showroom was in a warehouse space. That property was sold so it was an excellent time to reconsider the needs of both our clients and ourselves. With more clients seeking us out from the city and beyond, Victoria Street was a clear winner.

Predictions for the next year or two? Blurring of the lines between art, furniture and interiors – people like to feel inspired and invigorated by brilliant design which carries a deeper message. A sense of connecting to the artisan and materials used in the furniture is becoming very important.

What’s your favourite style? I’m a tried and true ‘transitional’. This means classically inspired forms and styles, generously scaled but pared back in detail and executed in fine materials.
